Shopify script tag audit and cleanup

Shopify stops loading storefront script tags on 1 March 2027. If a reviews widget, chat, pop-up or tracking feature still depends on one, it will stop without an error message. I'm Hamza Ahmad Aslam, and I check which scripts your store loads, who owns them and what needs to change, then give you a fix for each item.

From $79 per store

Fixed prices per store: the audit is $79 and the audit with cleanup $199. Migration Support is $399. Agency wholesale is $51 an audit or $129 with cleanup.

If an item we agreed to remove is still on the duplicate theme when you check it within 30 days, I remove it free.

What the Shopify script tag audit checks

Shopify prints the storefront script tags in the asyncLoad block inside content_for_header on every page. I check which tags your storefront still loads and identify the app that owns each one. Each app controls its own script tag. If one needs to be removed, the merchant or developer has to ask that app's support team.

I also inspect the theme for code an uninstalled app left behind, tracking code pasted directly into theme files, and render tags that point to snippets that no longer exist. For each script, I estimate the third-party JavaScript it adds. That is an estimate, not a speed score.

Every item gets a verdict and a fix: switch on the app embed, move tracking to a custom pixel, or remove leftover code. The app embed is switched on by hand for each theme in Online Store > Themes > Customize > App embeds. Many app embeds start switched off. Tracking-only scripts move to the vendor's app or a custom pixel under Settings > Customer events.

The March 2027 change

Since 1 October 2026, apps can no longer create or update script tags. Shopify stops loading storefront script tags on 1 March 2027. A feature that still relies on one, such as a reviews widget, chat, pop-up or tracking, stops on that date without showing an error message.

As a sample, on 1 November 2026 I checked the public home pages of 206 Shopify storefronts; 120 of them still loaded at least one script tag. It is one day's sample, so read it as a sign of how common this is.

Packages and delivery

Script Tag Audit, $79

Delivered within 3 days of payment. You get a read-only report in plain English. Nothing in the store changes. I can run this audit on the public storefront if you prefer.

Audit + Cleanup, $199

Delivered within 5 days of payment. After the audit, I remove the dead code we agree on from a backed-up duplicate of the theme. You preview the copy and publish it yourself.

Migration Support, $399

Delivered within 7 days of payment. This includes cleanup, contacting app vendors for you, and guidance to switch on app embeds for up to 5 apps, on a call or in a recorded video. I then re-check the live storefront. The package covers up to 3 theme copies.

White-label work for agencies and freelancers

I provide the same audit and cleanup as white-label work. The report carries your brand, and cleanup takes place on a duplicate theme for your team to publish. Wholesale pricing is $51 per audit or $129 per audit with cleanup.

How the work runs

Send me the store URL, the theme you want checked, the apps you rely on and anything that is already broken. If the audit needs store access, send a collaborator request code from Settings > Users > Security with theme access. I never ask for your password or a login code.

I reply within one business day with a fixed quote and an invoice. Work starts when the invoice is paid. I never edit a live theme. Any agreed changes go on a backed-up duplicate, which you preview and publish yourself.

Theme redesigns, new features and fixes to an app's own code are outside this service. If an app owns a tag that needs removal, I can identify it in the report, but its support team must remove it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about Shopify script tag audit and cleanup

What happens to a Shopify feature that still uses a script tag?Expand

Shopify stops loading storefront script tags on 1 March 2027. A reviews widget, chat, pop-up or tracking feature that still relies on one stops on that date without an error message.

Can I keep using an app if its script tag stops loading?Expand

For most apps, the replacement is an app embed. It must be switched on by hand for each theme in Online Store > Themes > Customize > App embeds. Many start switched off.

Can you remove a script tag owned by an app?Expand

Each app controls its own script tag. Only that app can remove it, so you or I need to ask the app's support team. I can identify the owner and include that next step in the report.

Can you audit my Shopify store without changing it?Expand

Yes. The $79 Script Tag Audit is a read-only report. I can check the public storefront only if you prefer, and nothing in the store changes.

How do you handle tracking scripts?Expand

Tracking-only scripts move to the vendor's app or a custom pixel under Settings > Customer events. The audit identifies the script and gives you a fix for it.

Will you edit my live theme?Expand

No. For agreed cleanup, I work on a backed-up duplicate of the theme. You preview and publish that copy yourself.

What access do you need?Expand

If the audit needs store access, send a collaborator request code from Settings > Users > Security with theme access. I never ask you to share a password or login code.

Do you fix app code or redesign themes?Expand

No. Theme redesigns, new features and fixes to an app's own code are outside this service. I can identify the app involved and direct you to its support team.
