What the app does
Shopify stops loading script tags on storefronts on 1 March 2027. Review widgets, chat, popups and tracking that are still added that way will stop working, with no error message.
Script Tag Audit lists every script tag on your storefront, checks your live theme for leftover app code, and tells you what to do with each item.
Run an audit
- Open Script Tag Audit from Apps in your Shopify admin.
- If your store is password protected, the app shows a storefront password field. The password is under Online Store > Preferences. Every development store is password protected.
- Click Run audit.
An audit can take a minute or two. It keeps running if you leave the page, and the result is there when you come back.
What the statuses mean
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Will break | Loaded through a script tag. It works today and stops on 1 March 2027. |
| Already dead | Broken now. The file or domain is gone, or the theme renders a snippet that is missing. |
| Review | Written into theme code. The cutoff does not affect it, but check that you still need it. |
| Safe | Already an app embed. Nothing to do. |
Fix a finding
| Fix | How |
|---|---|
| App embed | Update the app, then turn its embed on under Online Store > Themes > Customize > App embeds. |
| Web pixel | For a tracking-only script, use the vendor's official app or a custom pixel under Settings > Customer events. |
| Remove | Back up your theme first (Online Store > Themes > ... > Duplicate), then delete the code. |
Why the app asks for the storefront password
Shopify lists other apps' script tags only in the storefront page itself, not in its API. On a locked store, the app needs the password to load that page. It uses the password for that one audit and never stores it.
If you leave the password blank, the theme scan still runs. Script tags from other apps will not appear, and the summary says the storefront could not be read.
Theme changes
The app only reads theme files and never changes your theme. You make any removal yourself, or a developer does it after a cleanup request.
If an audit fails
If an audit does not finish, run it again. If it fails twice, email me your store address and the time you ran it.
"Could not be checked" means the script's server refused an automated request. The app does not mark those scripts as dead. Check the app that added the script in your Shopify admin.
Request a cleanup
Select findings, click Request cleanup and send the form. I reply to the email address you enter.
Uninstall the app
Uninstall it under Settings > Apps and sales channels. Shopify ends any subscription when you uninstall. The app deletes its access to your store at once, and deletes your audits and cleanup requests 48 hours later, when Shopify asks it to. The Script Tag Audit privacy policy explains what the app keeps and for how long.
